Essential Responsibilities
The Welder, under the direction of a Supervisor, welds metal components such as aluminum stainless and mild steel with gas welding equipment as specified by layout, welding diagram, or work order.
 
Specific Responsibilities
  • Plans work procedure
  • Runs manual machine
  • Learn to set-up electronic
  • Adjust speed for wire, temperature for heat
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by Welding Engineer or Welding Technician
  • Starts power supply to produce electric current
  • Pull trigger to start ARC which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications
  • Applies filler rod manually to supply weld metal
  • Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes
  • Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces and drilling a hole at ends of cracks
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter
  • Additional cross-functional duties as assigned 
         Fabrication
  • Preheats work piece with hand torch or heating furnace
  • Positions and clamps work pieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture
  • Tacks assemblies together
  • Bend and fold aluminum
  • Uses sheerer and a bender
  • Usage and Reading tape measures down to 16th of an inch
 
 
 
 
 
 
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 2-5 years of experience Welding: MIG, Arc, Flux and or trade school education
  • TIG experience and  D-1 Certification a plus
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Possess a strong mechanical aptitude
  • Willingness to learn the use of basic tools and equipment relative to the repair of transit busses
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision while working in a team-oriented environment
 
Must be able to:
  • Lift, pull and push up to 50 pounds of dead weight
  • Climb up and down a ladder
  • Stoop, kneel, squat, crouch and or crawl 
  • Twist/ Turn in confined spaces
