Summary:
 
Employees in this classification perform skilled mechanical tasks in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Essential functions: systematic diagnosing of malfunctions to include fuel, electrical systems, and mechanical systems; repairs, adjusts or replaces complete integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive train and differential, lubrication, cooling, exhaust and air or hydraulic systems; removes, rebuilds and replaces automatic transmission buses, and automobiles; inspects, adjusts. Troubleshoots and repairs the HVAC system, air ride systems, steering systems, and brake system; notifies the maintenance supervisor or lead of necessary repairs that had not been previously assigned; enters work order data on work order; maintains a clean and orderly work area: and performs other related duties as assigned.
 
KNOWLEDGE AND ABLITIES:
 
Knowledge of: Methods. Materials, tools, and standard practices related to the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment; principles of spark-ignited or diesel powered engines; safety precautions followed in heavy equipment repair shops.
 
Ability to: use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulics hoists, clean materials and other tools and equipment used in the service and repair of heavy equipment; understand and carry out oral and written
Instructions work with other employees in a directed work team environment; conceptualize required work
through personal observation or a verbal description and determine what is necessary to obtain quality results: perform computerized work order procedure; pass a job related examination; pass a federally required drug and alcohol testing; drive all job related vehicles and maintain a valid in Stale driver's license and COL as required
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICALIFICATIONS:
 
Any one of the following: 4 years of experience in the heavy duty diesel, automotive, aviation or marine repair and maintenance as a journey–level mechanic;
OR
Two years of experience in heavy duty diesel or automotive equipment repair and maintenance as a journey-level mechanic and the completion of a one-year vocational or community college or automotive program or a recognized apprentice program.
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the application with the knowledge and skills to perform the work of the position. Regular attendance and performance of duties as assigned are required for this position.
 
In addition:
 
  • Journey-level knowledge of and skill in the principles, practices, techniques, tools and equipment of the automotive and diesel repair trade. Knowledge of mechanical principles of diesel, gasoline powered engines, pneumatic, hydraulic systems; power train suspension, chassis components and assemblies; electrical, braking, heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Skill in the operation of electronic diagnostic equipment as well as power and hand tool used in mechanical maintenance and equipment repair.
  • Basic computer skills required to extract information from the automated vehicle maintenance system and related software
  • Written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Good customer service skills
  • Skill in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Performs other duties as assigned
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
Must be willing to work any shift (assignment to swing shift, graveyard and/or weekends likely). Must possess a complete set of heavy equipment tools with a rollaway toolbox and a valid in state Driver’s License at the time of hire. Must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License permit (with Skills Test Results form) within thirty of hire and obtain a Class B CDL with Air Brakes abs Passenger endorsements within 90 days of hire. Must have the ability to maneuver objects weighing up to fifty pounds.
