Essential Responsibilities
The Compliance and Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring company-wide compliance with all federal and state health and safety regulations as well as the management of the Hazardous Waste Storage Area (HWSA) and responds to credible threats involving Chemical, Biological, and Radiological (CBR) incidents. 
 
Specific Responsibilities
  • Manage the receipt, storage, and tracking of hazardous waste and place orders for supplies and equipment
  • Safely remove and dispose of hazardous materials and prepare worksite to ensure safety during removal
  • Maintain the HWSA in compliance with regulations, receive customers and visitors to the HWSA, answer questions and provide information on HWSA requirements
  • Inspect facilities for compliance with environmental health and safety regulations
  • Perform weekly inventories, label drums and inspect deliveries of hazardous materials or hazardous waste
  • Complete waste profiles and update waste profile system
  • Correct waste manifests and provide guidance to customers on proper manifesting, labeling and packaging
  • Assist during hazardous material spill response actions and clean up when required
  • Preparation of site specific safety and loss control plans for all locations
  • Development of safety training programs for all locations
  • Preparation of safety reports
  • Investigation, preparation, and follow-through of all accidents and near misses
  • Development and implementation of weekly safety meeting topics
  • Maintain EPA compliant guidelines for the company per federal, state, and local laws
  • Perform storm water sampling and understand results
  • Keep up with all permitting requirements and renewals
  • Have vast knowledge of all OSHA rules and regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned
 
Required Qualifications
  • Two (2) or more years’ of experience working with hazardous waste, hazardous materials or equivalent
  • OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certificate and applicable annual 8-hour refresher certificates
  • Skill in safely, effectively and promptly segregating, consolidating and neutralizing excess hazardous materials
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and procedures (OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and EPA)
 
Must be able to:
  • Carry, pull and push up to 50 pounds of dead weight
  • Climb up and down a ladder
  • Sit, stand stoop, kneel, squat, crouch and or crawl 
  • Twist or turn in confined spaces
