Essential Responsibilities
The primary duty of the Bus Mechanic is to diagnose, repair, rebuild, and overhaul transit buses and related equipment, according to manuals and factory specifications, using hand and power tools.  The Bus Mechanic must have knowledge of and understand how parts of the bus or coach must perform.  Employees in this classification perform skilled mechanical tasks in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
 
Specific Responsibilities
  • Read job orders, observe and listen to vehicles in operation to determine malfunction
  • Inspect, test, adjust, repair, replace, rebuild, and overhaul vehicle equipment, assemblies, sub-assemblies, and related equipment, machinery, and tools
  • Systematic diagnosis of malfunctions to include fuel, electrical systems, and mechanical systems
  • Repair, adjust or replace complete integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive train and differential, lubrication, cooling, exhaust and air or hydraulic systems
  • Removes, rebuild, and replace automatic transmission buses and automobiles
  • Inspect, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair the HVAC system, air ride systems, steering systems, and brake system
  • Notify the maintenance supervisor or lead of necessary repairs that had not been previously assigned
  • Enters work order data on work order
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area: and performs other related duties as assigned
 
Required Qualifications
  •  Minimum of 3 - 5 years diesel maintenance experience on buses, transit, or coach buses 
  • Knowledge of: Methods. Materials, tools, and standard practices related to the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment; principles of spark-ignited or diesel powered engines; safety precautions followed in heavy equipment repair shops
  • Ability to: use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulics hoists, clean materials and other tools and equipment used in the service and repair of heavy equipment
  • Understand and carry out oral and written Instructions
  • Work with other employees in a directed work team environment
  • Conceptualize required work through personal observation or a verbal description and determine what is necessary to obtain quality results
  • Perform computerized work order procedure
  • Pass a job related examination; pass a federally required drug and alcohol testing
  • Drive all job related vehicles
  • Maintain a valid in Stale driver's license and CDL with Passenger Endorsements as required, or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment
  • Must be able to work any shift and have own tools
 
Must be able to:
  • Lift, pull and push up to  50 pounds of dead weight
  • Climb up and down a ladder
  • Stoop, kneel, and or crawl
