Essential Responsibilities
The Mechanic Interior Technician, under the direction of the Production Supervisor, assesses, inspects, adjusts, and or repairs and overhauls interior workings for transit vehicles such as: buses, vans, trollies, trams and automotive vehicles. Responsibilities also include the installation and repair of interior components and accessories, including but not limited to: siding, windows, doors, vents, floor coverings and panels. May specialize in maintaining simple electrical needs as well as repairing interior components.
 
Specific Responsibilities
  • Plans work procedure.
  • Removes used flooring and wooden support.
  • Prepares floor for installation or replacement of floor coverings by cleaning, sanding, and filling.
  • Loads, unloads, and carries floor covering materials and equipment.
  • Prepares, measures, trims, cements, installs, and stretches resilient floor coverings.
  • May install floor coverings on ramps and steps, using such materials as nonslip floor covering.
  • Raises vehicle, with hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle.
  • Removes unit such as engine, transmission, or differential, brakes values and front and rear suspension.
  • Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear.
  • Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings.
  • Overhauls or replaces, blowers, generators, starters, alternators and A/C components.
  • Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panel.
  • Relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, repairs or replaces shock absorbers, and solders leaks in radiator.
  • Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, windshield wipers, and windshields.
  • Remove damaged exterior panels, and repair and replace structural frame members
  • Open and close doors, windows, and drawers to test their operation, trimming edges to fit as necessary
  • Reset hardware, using chisels, mallets, and screwdrivers
  • Keeps Production Supervisor appraised of work progress
  • Performs various additional duties as assigned
 
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience installing/repairing interior vehicle components
  • Prior technical experience in carpentry and electrical highly desired
  • Prior mechanical experience
  • Knowledge of hand held tools
  • Ability to multitask and complete tasks efficiently and in a timely manner
  • Capability to work in a fast pace environment
 
Must be able to:
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, reach overhead, kneel, balance, push, pull, and lift items weighing up to 50 pounds
  •  May work for extended periods on hands and knees, on wooden or concrete floor
  • Will stoop and crouch repeatedly. Requires manual dexterity and strength
  • May climb ladders, steps and scaffolding on a daily basis
